About the opportunity
NSW Health Pathology's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Immunology Laboratory is looking for an experienced immunology Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist to work in a permanent full-time capacity. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is part of the Sydney Local Health District, and provides a number of specialized services that support complex patients, including a large adult intensive care unit with ECMO beds, neonatal intensive care, high risk obstetrics, liver and renal transplantation, Haematology services, Cardiac and many other patients from different units with profound iatrogenic immunosuppression (rheumatology, immunology and neurology).


What you'll be doing
Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  3. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems,  practical experience in  laboratory document management, QA/QC processes, audit activity, opportunity improvement and method writing.
  4. Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  5. Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
  6.  Extensive high-level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory, and advanced skills in method validation, statistical analysis, evaluation report writing, and robust troubleshooting. 
  7. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
