About the opportunity
The Haematology Laboratory at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is seeking an experienced flow cytometry scientist to act as the Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist In Charge of the Flow Section of the laboratory in a Full Time capacity. Situated in the heart of Sydney, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH), and part of NSW Health Pathology, the Haematology department provides specialised diagnostic haematology testing. The 24/7 laboratory provides full blood count analysis, specialised coagulation testing, morphology as well as specialised flow cytometry testing and thalassaemia screening.

What you'll be doing
Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Extensive high level knowledge of Flow Cytometry including malignant and non-malignant haematology testing with various sample types such as peripheral blood, bone marrow and tissue
  3. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant NPAAC and ISO standards and quality systems
  4. Demonstrated experience supervising a section with with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  5. Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
  6. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
  7. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedure
