The Royal Hospital for Women is a multi-faceted tertiary referral and teaching hospital, internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading centres for the care of mothers, babies, and women with benign gynaecological and gynae-oncology conditions. As the only stand-alone women’s hospital in New South Wales, it offers unique opportunities for innovative clinical practice and is committed to delivering excellence in women’s health care through both practice and ongoing research.
 
Registered midwives have the chance to work in all areas of midwifery through various models of care including continuity of care models, high risk maternity, aboriginal infant and maternal health and the newborn intensive care unit.  There are eight midwifery group practices providing continuity of midwifery care for approximately half of all women who book to give birth at the hospital.
 
The Hospital has a very high standard of midwifery care and provides undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery education programs and offers staff the opportunity to further their education and access professional development as well as the support of nursing and midwifery education support staff.
 
Registered nurses and midwives also have access to a new graduate program to develop skills in newborn care, the high risk dependency unit and Midwifery Group Practice.
 
The role
 
All staff are expected to act as an appropriate and effective role model and promote culture and supporting practices that reflect the NSW Health CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment through demonstrated behaviours and interactions with patients, clients and employees. 
 
The CERS Consultant will act as the primary resource person for nursing, medical, allied health and communication staff in all matters pertaining to the implementation and sustainability of the clinical and operational effectiveness of the Clinical emergency response system or its equivalent. S/he will work collaboratively with the Executive lead to ensure ongoing systems are in place for management of the deteriorating patient. The CERS Consultant is also responsible for data collection and outcome reporting through active participation in systems and clinical reviews and ensuring that any variance to CERS policy is feedback to appropriate clinical areas. 
 
The CERS Consultant will also deliver education packages and training strategies for general ward areas, including  CERS Orientation, co-ordinate DETECT Practical sessions and collaborate with managers to enable clinicians to complete DETECT e-learning. 
 
The CERS coordinator provides training in Adult basic life support and teaches and assesses lead clinicians in training for adult basic life support. This includes any changes from the Australian Resuscitation council. The CERS coordinator also assists with Advanced Life Support training at POW and also assesses RHW staff post completion of the course. 
 
The CERS coordinator (in collaboration with others) ensures the ward arrest trolleys contents are in line with MOH policy and Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. 
 
The CERS coordinator is the Sepsis Lead for RHW and delivers education and training for all clinical staff on the Sepsis Kills program. 
 
Maintain responsibility for personal and professional development by participating in training/education activities, and performance reviews/appraisals in order to continuously improve the level of service provided to patients/clients. 
 
The CERS coordinator is the lead person for NHQHS Standard 8; Recognising and Responding to clinical deterioration.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum five years full time equivalent post graduate qualification experience and a post graduate qualification in field of practice.
  3. Critical Care experience with extensive knowledge of systems and processes for the recognition and management of the deteriorating patient.
  4. Experience in data collection, data management and the interpretation of data.
  5. Extensive experience in the delivery of education and training and auditing effectiveness of training.
  6. Experience in clinical change management and quality improvement, including the ability to positively influence senior clinical staff.
  7. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, combined with a high level of computer literacy.
  8. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
