What you'll be doing

This is a 12 month, four term rotational position within the Acute Care Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) program, with 3-month rotations in each paediatrics, ICU, obstetrics, and ED.
The paediatric and obstetric rotations include a component of time in rural general practice, with supervision from a rural generalist. It is based in South East Regional Hospital, a 100 bed facility on the south coast of NSW.  
The trainee will be part of a departmental roster
 providing experience for JMO'S wishing to develop a baseline practical skillset for the management of patients in the acute inpatient and GP setting. 


This position would suit trainees considering a career in rural general practice as a Rural Generalist, or the  in the specialties of Paediatrics, and Obstetrics/Gynaecology.   Rotations during the year include ED, ICU, Paediatrics and Obstetrics. Trainees will be given responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with their experience, at a similar level to that of a junior registrar. This will be accompanied by appropriate supervision, training and support to enable development of relevant skills during the training year.


This Child and Maternal Health SRMO program is designed to enhance both clinical expertise and professional development, offering a unique opportunity to grow in a supportive and scenic environment. It is designed for junior doctors that are interested in a career as a rural GP or rural generalist, as a specialist in obstetrics, paediatrics, or critical care disciplines in the rural environment. It is also for anyone interested in the idea of working in a rural hospital and would like to explore this. 

Our program begins with a comprehensive orientation designed to familiarize you with our hospital's operations, culture, and will ensure a baseline level of competency at core skills required for the position. You will benefit from the weekly training program during the year, which will include hands-on clinical experiences, simulation-based education, interactive workshops, and integration into our multidisciplinary teams. The teaching program will be complemented by ongoing mentorship from experienced senior medical staff, ensuring you receive personalized guidance and support.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Must have completed at least two postgraduate years training including a minimum 12-months experience in an Australian Public Hospital or equivalent (not as an Observer).
  3. Evidence of satisfactory completion of at least 2 JMO terms within an acute care setting, or demonstrated equivalent experience, within the last 12 months.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery, and coordination of patient care.
  5. Sufficient clinical experience to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
  6. Excellent clinical knowledge, skills, and team work, with demonstrated ability to work both independently within a supervised complex clinical environment and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Ability to recognise the acutely unwell patient and to initiate immediate management and institute Advanced Life Support, with a current ALS2 or equivalent qualification.
  8. Advanced organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment. Valid Working with Children Check and cleared National Police Check.
