Ministry of Health

The NSW Ministry of Health supports the NSW Health Cluster and Portfolio Ministers to perform their executive and statutory functions.​ These functions include improving the health and wellbeing of the people of NSW, while considering the needs of the state and the finances and resources available.​


Our staff work on a range of strategic projects and programs in collaboration with local health districts, specialty networks and other health organisations to deliver on the health priorities of the NSW Government.

Junior Medical Officer

Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) provide direct clinical care of patients in public hospital and health facilities within NSW. The recruitment of JMOs has a number of unique characteristics that differentiate it from other public sector recruitment activities.


NSW Health coordinates an annual JMO Recruitment Campaign where the majority of vocational and non-vocational positions are advertised for commencement in the following clinical year. However, some positions become available throughout the year on an ad-hoc basis. All positions are advertised via the Medical Officers portal.

Medical Intern

Medical interns provide medical services to patients, while developing expertise and skills in medical practice, in a range of complex clinical environments including inpatient and outpatient settings.


Annual Medical Intern Recruitment in NSW is managed by the Medical Portfolio at the NSW Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). All applications for intern positions are completed online via the MIRA Career Portal, click here to apply.

Graduate registered nurse and registered midwife

Graduate registered nurses and registered midwives are recruited to a diverse range of health facilities within NSW. Opportunities exist in acute care settings, community health, mental health and rural and remote areas. More than a third of new graduate nurses and midwives in NSW complete their graduate year in rural and regional settings. 
 
NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Office coordinates the annual recruitment of graduate nurses and midwives.  Employers recruit to their available positions at participating facilities for the following year through the GradStart campaign.

Postgraduate midwifery student

Registered nurses who wish to become registered midwives can apply to postgraduate midwifery student positions available across a broad range of metropolitan, rural and regional maternity services in NSW. Concurrently, midwifery students are responsible for enrolling in an approved postgraduate midwifery program at one of seven (7) participating universities in NSW.  
 
NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Office coordinates the annual recruitment of midwifery student positions. Employers recruit to their available positions at participating maternity services for the following year through the MidStart campaign.
