Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. Westmead Hospital provides approximately 638 acute overnight, 30 day only and 52 subacute beds. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the biggest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health and research capability of the area.

What you'll be doing
Assist Accredited Radiology Trainees with their rostered responsibilities. SRMOs will be taught to learn, observe and participate in all stages of the radiological examination of patients including referral, triaging, prescribing oral or intra-venous contrast, checking for allergies, supervision, assisting with performance and communication of the procedure. They will participate in Medical Imaging Department activities assisting Clinical Radiologists including scholarship, medical professionalism, team work, communication, advocacy and management. 

  • To perform duties as allocated by Consultant Radiologists, Directors of Training, Clinical Director of Radiology. 
  • Assist Consultant Radiologists, postgraduate fellow, accredited and/or unaccredited trainees as applicable, with general radiology consultation and procedural preparation for patients referred to the department for radiological investigation and procedures.
  • Assist in protocoling examination(s) for the patient considering the referral and patient history, under supervision of the Director and/or the rostered supervising Consultant Radiologist.
  • Provide initial response to medical reviews within the department for conditions such as and not limited to contrast extravasation, contrast allergy or post procedural cares.
  • Assist Consultant Radiologists, postgraduate fellows, accredited and/or unaccredited trainees as appliable, in reporting of diagnostic and interventional procedures undertaken in a timely manner under the direct supervision of the rostered supervising Consultant Radiologist.
  • By the end of training, the SRMO should be able to assist in providing an effective radiology service to patients under supervision, whilst having participated in medical and imaging practice in a complex clinical environment.
  1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum of two years postgraduate experience at start of training (ie:PGY3 or above), with recent clinical practice- including emergency medical care, after hours rostered duties and procedural work. Must have two years post-graduate clinical experience including medical ward rotations and good term assessments.
  3. Demonstrated interest in radiology training
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a complex health care setting with proven time management and problem solving skills.
  5. Excellent written, verbal and multimedia skills, in order to interact effectively with patients, referrers, colleagues and other team members
  6. Understanding and promotion of collaborative effort and empathy within a heterogeneous team environment such as a radiology department.
  7. Excellent academic record commensurate with experience, evidence of on-going learning, teaching activities potential involvement with projects and research publications.
  8. Understanding quality improvement principles, commitment to CME, audit, implementation of practice improvement initiatives.
