About the Opportunity
The program involves delivery of a 6-week intensive therapeutic program to children and young people 17yrs and under.
Safeguards is embedded within Infant and Child Adolescent Mental Health specialist services, boasting a dynamic team of Mental Health Professionals with a high level of expertise in the infant child mental health.
The successful candidate will be working within iCAMHS Macarthur, extending their support to families of children and Adolescents that are under the care of the service.
SWSLHD has a large well supported Aboriginal Mental Health Team with a mix of Clinicians, Senior/Principal and Mental Health Workers. The majority are embedded in various teams to support Aboriginal consumer/carer engagement and contribution to their cultural and clinical needs.
The position, as part of the multidisciplinary team, also promotes and supports the cultural responsiveness of mental health services within the LHD and other services in the community.
The Senior/Principal Health Worker roles are part of a growing network that offer cultural leadership and support to the Aboriginal Mental Health Workers. This position will provide support in the Macarthur to Wingecarribee areas.

Safeguards is an assertive outreach mental health team for under 18-year-old young people experiencing mental health crisis. The outreach model of care was created to be able to engage and support our most vulnerable young people, who have barriers to engaging with clinic-based services.
The primary role of this position is to provide culturally responsive, recovery oriented, evidence-based assessment and interventions to Aboriginal consumers of Safeguards and their family and carers. The position holder is also responsible for providing professional and cultural support to Aboriginal Mental Health staff in the Southern Western Sydney region ensuring they feel culturally safe in their roles and are supported to deliver culturally responsive care. The Principal Aboriginal Mental Health Worker will play a key role in ensuring Macarthur Safeguards has systems and relationships in place that support the delivery of culturally responsive care to Aboriginal consumers and their families.

- This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977.
- For the Principal AHW: Holds a university degree qualification and a willingness to obtain a post graduate qualification relevant to Mental Health. For the Senior AHW: Certificate IV Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Care or other relevant qualifications and /or relevant experience working within Aboriginal Health programs.
- Demonstrated understanding of the range of factors that have influenced the health status of Aboriginal communities with a focus on social and emotional wellbeing.
- Demonstrated experience playing a leadership role in the development and delivery of culturally responsive health services to Aboriginal communities.
- Ability to undertake health/social needs assessments that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal culture and social issues in relation to mental health; and make referrals to community service providers.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide care coordination or case management services to Aboriginal clients and their families.
- Demonstrated ability to establish systems that maintain the cultural integrity of services and to contribute to ongoing service review and evaluation.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and computer skills.
- Demonstrated experience developing service networks and referral pathways that support access to services.
- Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
