Join us as a key member of the Brighter Beginnings Health and Development Checks (BBHDC) in Preschools Service Team, part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Child, Youth, and Family Community Health Service. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, playing an essential role in delivering the NSW First 2000 Days Policy to support preschool-aged children and their families in early childhood education settings.

Royal North Shore Community Health Centre as part of the Brighter Beginnings Health and Development Checks Team

What you'll be doing

The Senior Dietitian works both autonomously and collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary Brighter Beginnings Health and Development Checks (BBHDC) Preschool Team, providing child-focused health and development screening, assessment and brief interventions for preschool age-children attending Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres across the Northern Sydney Region. The BBHDC program is a collaboration between NSW Health, the NSW Department of Early Education and preschools and aims to identify children’s health and development support needs, and enhance their access to early intervention services, before they start primary school. 

This senior dietitian holds specialist expertise and advanced practice skills in infant and child nutritional needs in the first 2000 days of life and applies this high-level knowledge to engage and work in partnership with families and children to develop effective recommendations and care plans for children from diverse backgrounds, including vulnerable families. The role also facilitates referrals and supports families to access children's Dietetics services and ensures safe clinical handover.  They also apply high level interpersonal communication skills to actively contribute to interdisciplinary team case reviews, children’s care planning conferences and to coordinate care.  

The role assists with developing resources suitable for children from diverse backgrounds and offers advice to ECE staff and assists with BBHDC capacity building programs for ECE centres to promote optimal child nutrition.  Provide clinical education and supervision for students.
The BBHD Team is part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Community Health Service and the role reports professionally and operationally to the CYF Speech Pathology and Dietetics Team Leader.  

The CYF service philosophy of care revolves around working in partnership with families, providing child-centred, safe, culturally sensitive, trauma and evidence-informed, neurodiversity affirming and integrated care that optimises lifelong health, development, learning, wellbeing and social participation outcomes for children and families.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Must hold a bachelor or post graduate degree in nutrition and dietetics that provides eligibility for full membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia.
  2. High level clinical knowledge of Paediatric Dietetics and evidence of extensive clinical experience as a Dietitian Level 2 in assessing, planning and evaluating nutritional interventions for children aged 0-5 years, who present with developmental and complex social or health needs, including trauma.
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide high-level clinical consultation, information, guidance and education to parents, caregivers and Early Childhood Educators to facilitate and promote optimal child nutrition and development.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice, evidence of quality improvement and service evaluation skills and experience. Understanding of population health concepts.
