Where you'll be working
John Hunter Children's Hospital (JHCH) is a specialised tertiary referral paediatric hospital in Newcastle, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma and neonatal care services for Northern NSW. The Children's Hospital in Newcastle, one of three children's hospitals in NSW, will over the course of a year see almost 25,000 children and young people present to the emergency department, have 9,000 admitted to hospital and perform over 100,000 occasions of service through outpatient clinics. Other regional hospitals part of the HNEkidshealth Network are Belmont, Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton, Armidale, Tamworth and Manning Hospital.
Maple Leaf House is a standalone outpatient service providing holistic multi-disciplinary care for trans and gender diverse youth up to 25 years. Maple Leaf is an accredited RACP advanced training site for Adolescent Young Adult Medicine (AYAM). This position is now accredited to The Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

What you'll be doing
The Advanced Trainee will participate in the multidisciplinary assessment and management of adolescents and young people who identify as transgender or gender diverse and the co-morbid diagnosis that may occur. This may include mental health difficulties, common developmental conditions, disordered eating, concerns around sexual health and dealing with high-risk youth. Indigenous clients comprise approximately 8% of all presentations. adding additional cultural complexities. This position will require a mature and experienced Trainee who has experience with marginalised population groups and who have experienced health inequity within the health system.
The role is designed to encourage professional development as an advanced trainee providing service delivery in a clinical outpatient setting. The trainee will have the opportunity to provide both paediatric and adolescent clinics under Consultant supervision. These clinics will run within a multidisciplinary team paediatric and adult model of care.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience in Community Paediatrics, Adolescent Medicine or General Paediatric outpatient management including clinics.
Awareness and interest in supporting young people who identify as transgender or gender diverse.
Commitment to and requirement to complete further training.
Demonstrated ability to manage and work with teams to support and optimise their capacity to deliver services.
Demonstrated enthusiasm and proven teaching skills.
Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health and their importance in improving health outcomes for children, young people and their families.
