The Medical Physics Department is a small, dynamic, and friendly team based at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. We provide radiation safety support to 40 hospitals and community clinics across HNELHD, so there are plenty of opportunities for travel!

John Hunter Hospital is Australia's only major trauma centre outside of a capital city and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in New South Wales. It is the largest tertiary hospital in New South Wales, outside of the Sydney area. The hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment that will deliver some exciting expansions and changes. About the role:
The successful candidate will work as the sole nuclear medicine physicist to provide clinical medical physics support to three departments of Nuclear Medicine, two based in Newcastle and one in Tamworth, all with SPECT-CT and PET-CT. A typical week involves several radionuclide therapies and the successful candidate will be required to oversee the safe administration and discharge of patients.
The Medical Physics Department is supportive of education and professional development opportunities, such as courses or conferences affiliated with the relevant professional colleges.
About you:
- The successful candidate must have demonstrated clinical experience in nuclear medicine & PET medical physics, especially quality control testing. Experience in theranostics and tailored dosimetry is desirable.
- The ability to communicate radiation safety concepts in a meaningful and empathetic manner requires high level communication and interpersonal skills.
- Due to the large geographical area and demanding workload, the successful candidate must have excellent organisational and time management skills and be able to work independently.
- A reasonable level of educational and supervisory skills is required, but the Senior Medical Physics Specialist can provide further guidance in these areas.
- Expertise in research and associated capabilities (e.g. critical thinking, statistical analyses, scientific writing) will be viewed favourably, but such skills can be developed in the role.
Requirements:
- Meets the requirements for registration as a Qualified Medical Physics Specialist (QMPS) in Nuclear Medicine Physics by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM).
- Australian citizenship or permanent resident status.
- Current NSW Drivers Licence or ability to obtain one.
- Current NSW EPA Radiation User Licence or ability to obtain one.
