What you'll be doing
WSLHD - Advanced Trainee, Metabolic Genetics/Research - Westmead Hospital

Provide Genetic Medicine services to inpatients and outpatients of Westmead Hospital as a member of the Department of Genetic Medicine, under the supervision of consultant clinical geneticists from Westmead Hospital. This position involves participation in the Adult Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service for outpatients and inpatients with known or suspected metabolic disorders. In addition, the position entails participation in research projects under the supervision of members of the Department of Genetic Medicine.  

Genetic services in Western Sydney LHD are provided at Westmead Hospital.  The majority of clinical and laboratory services are located at CHW, integrated as the Western Sydney Genetics Program (WSGP).  General genetic services at Westmead Hospital are provided by Westmead based staff specifically appointed to provide services to adults including general genetics and adults with genetic metabolic disorders. General genetics services are also provided to babies in the Westmead Hospital neonatal intensive care unit. Prenatal genetics services are provided by staff from CHW. Services based at CHW include Departments of Clinical Genetics, Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service, NSW Biochemical Genetics Service, Cytogenetics Department, Molecular Genetics Department, NSW Newborn Screening Program and Academic Department of Medical Genetics.


The Adult Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service at Westmead commenced in 2010, funded through NSW Health to provide adult services in Genetic Metabolic Medicine and facilitate transition of adult patients from each of the paediatric hospitals in NSW to adult services.  The service is based at Westmead, but you may be required to work at other locations and clinical DEpartments listed below:
  Charles Perkins Centre, Sydney University
-  Children’s Hospital, Westmead 


Advanced training positions in Clinical Genetics and Genetic Metabolic Medicine in NSW are available to advanced trainees of the College of Physicians in Paediatrics, Adult Medicine or other recognised colleges. Positions for 2023 will be offered at major teaching hospitals including Westmead, CHW, SCH, RNSH and RPAH/Liverpool. 



    1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
    2. Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as an advanced trainee or equivalent. Those registered with the RACP, must have successfully completed both written and clinical components of the FRACP examination.
    3. 3-6 months experience in relevant subspecialty or equivalent is an advantage (e.g. neurology, endocrinology)
    4. Completion of mandatory training as required by RACP or equivalent preferable (if applicant registered with RACP). Other required skills include IV cannula insertion, Venepuncture, and basic life support skills.
    5. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
    6. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
    7. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal
    8. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees.
