What you'll be doing

The Rural Generalist Aboriginal Health Nurse Practitioner/Transitional Nurse Practitioner (NP/TNP) provides high levels of clinically focused care across a range of services: emergency, inpatient, chronic and complex care and primary care.

The NP/TNP will: 
  • Work autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended nursing clinical role, meeting the clinical demand within their defined and agreed scope of practice and formulary, including patients with chronic and complex care.
  • Provide expertise in chronic and complex health conditions and support the development of best practice emergency / inpatient care plans and coordination of discharge plans for identified high risk Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with chronic and/or complex medical diagnosis that present to Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Galambila Aboriginal Medical services.
  • Create culturally safe partnerships to address priority population groups within the Coffs Clinical Network community including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people living with a disability, people experiencing homelessness or on low incomes, older people and culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
  • Coordinate health care activity and referral to, and liaison with, internal and external community agencies and services relevant to their conditions.

Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. All applicants must supply either a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service, or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council. Exemption is claimed under Section 14D of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

The role is a key position focussed on high level care and cultural connection for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. If you are looking for the next career move or career development, this position could be the role you are looking for.
  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia 
  • Hold a current practicing certificate to practice as a Nurse Practitioner OR willing to work towards endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner with the ability to complete all requirements within 2 years. MNCLHD will provide the TNP support required in relation to clinical and educational study needs.
  • Evidence of existing advanced practice skills and the ability to critically evaluate and integrate relevant research findings into decision making about health care management and interventions.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with proven ability to use appropriate teaching/learning strategies to educate and support others within the specialty and the profession with the use of contemporary change management methodologies and an understanding of current issues impacting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
