Achieve Something Great 
The Safe Start Midwife is a key member of the multidisciplinary maternity, perinatal and infant mental health team. The role supports the implementation of the NSW Health SAFE START Strategic Policy and local SWLSHD SAFE START Guideline by identifying, assessing, and responding to psychosocial risk factors affecting women and families during the perinatal period.The SAFE START Midwife provides trauma-informed, culturally safe, woman-centred care through psychosocial assessment, early intervention, referral pathways, and collaboration with maternity, mental health, allied health and child and family health services. The role aims to promote emotional wellbeing and improve outcomes for mothers, infants, and families at risk of perinatal mental health issues or psychosocial distress.The SAFE START Midwife will be responsible for -Chairing weekly SAFE START meeting -Run continuity clinic for vulnerable women-Maintaining database of SAFE START women/ referrals-Referring women to appropriate services -Networking across Health and Non-Government Organisations  
 

Are You the Right Fit? 
You have sound antenatal knowledge and demonstrate a strong understanding of the SAFE START policy and relevant clinical guidelines. You are confident working with an extended scope of practice, exercising professional judgement and autonomy to provide complex care that requires advanced clinical skills. You work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and communicate in a respectful, person‑centred manner with women, families, carers, and healthcare professionals. You are experienced in coordinating care for vulnerable women and engage with women and families in a culturally sensitive and inclusive way, including working closely with Aboriginal Liaison Officers, interpreters, and multicultural services to ensure equitable and responsive care. 
 

 

Selection Criteria 
To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below. 
 

1. Current Authority to Practice as a Midwife with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Post-registration qualifications or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation. 
2. Demonstrated knowledge of SAFE START policy/guidelines and psychosocial risk assessment tools, including understanding of perinatal mental health issues. 
3. Proven experience in perinatal care, including working with women and families experiencing vulnerability or complex needs.
