Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). This permanent 0.2FTE position is part of the Specialist Intellectual Disability Health Team within WSLHD Allied Health and is based at Westmead Hospital.

About the Specialist Intellectual Disability Health Team (SIDHT)

The SIDHT within WSLHD focuses on enhancing healthcare for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The team provides expert advice, supports healthcare providers in managing complex health needs, and develops tailored care plans to address unresolved health issues. As a psychiatrist in this role, you will collaborate with SIDHT to ensure holistic and inclusive mental health care for this vulnerable population.

 

The preferred candidate will be a values-driven clinician with demonstrated expertise in psychiatry and a genuine commitment to improving health outcomes for people with intellectual disability. They will possess strong clinical judgment, a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary care, and the ability to navigate complex presentations with sensitivity and cultural awareness. Experience in trauma-informed practice, diagnostic overshadowing, and systems-based care will be highly regarded, as will a passion for advocacy, capacity-building, and service innovation within an evolving specialist team.

 

Essential Requirements for Appointment

·    Current medical practitioner registered or eligible for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and Fellowship of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and/or other equivalent specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award.

·    Demonstrated current clinical practice in psychiatry and intellectual disability mental health, of a high standard, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice, including in acute adult psychiatry.

·   Demonstrated effective communication skills (written and verbal), clinical skills, judgement and expertise, teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills in a clinical setting.

·     Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

·     Demonstrated track record in supervision and training of junior medical staff, including prevocational and trainees.

·     Evidence of the following attributes: ability to work under pressure; ability to work effectively as part of a team; ability to be flexible, organised and autonomous.

·    Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and professional development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education and continuing professional development.

·     Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of the Western Sydney Local Health District, including the provision of services to local community, effective use of resources, preparedness to participate in provision of health services at District level, if credentialed.

 

Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration at time of applying.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

3.    Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

o    Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

o    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

o    Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.

o    Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.

o    Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.

4.    Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.

5.    Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:

o    Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.

o    Commitment to self -care and personal development.

o    Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.

o    Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others.

6.    Commitment to good governance, achieving results and managing risks.

7.    Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training and Research, as applicable to the position.
