The General Medicine department at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) are seeking temporary and permanent Staff Specialists to join their team as soon as possible. Staff Specialists in General Medicine work across all areas of the General Medicine department, including acute medical care (inclusive of the Children's Short Stay Unit), and Chronic & Complex Care. The role also includes contributing to outpatient and ambulatory services and supporting evolving and innovative models of care according to departmental needs, contributing to excellent education and training, and furthering research and quality improvement initiatives. With The Children's Hospital at Westmead redevelopment and upcoming Wattle Building opening, clinicians will be expected to engage in new or evolving aspects of service delivery and growth as they emerge, adapting to the needs of the department and broader services.
Temporary and permanent positions up 3.0 FTE are available. Higher fractions are preferred.
What you'll be doing
We are seeking Staff Specialist(s) in General Medicine who are committed to delivering exceptional, evidence‑based care, supporting an environment of continuous improvement. The successful applicant(s) will contribute to high‑quality clinical service provision, participate in quality improvement and service development activities, and collaborate closely with nursing, allied health, and specialty teams. Participation in the on‑call roster will be aligned with service requirements and candidate availability.
The Staff Specialist will contribute actively to clinical governance, including quality and safety activities, clinical audit, guideline review, morbidity and mortality meetings, and service development initiatives. Commitment to maintaining high standards of professional practice -upholding the NSW Health CORE values and hospital's code of conduct, compliance with mandatory training, and participation in annual performance review processes is essential.
As an academic paediatric centre, the department values and supports engagement in research, including contribution to clinical research projects, collaborations with university partners, and translation of evidence into clinical practice.
The Staff Specialist will also play a key role in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees, providing both formal teaching and informal or case‑based teaching within interdisciplinary settings.

Please note: To be eligible for permanent appointment to a position in NSW Health, you must have an Australian citizenship or permanent Australian residency.
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Paediatrics, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
- Demonstrated recent clinical experience in General Paediatrics at the role delineation of the service including short stay, inpatient and ambulatory outpatient models or care.
- Proven contemporary experience in the management of children with tertiary general medical conditions, including chronic, complex care needs
- Proven ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team, provide clinical leadership, and model effective communication in a variety of settings
- Demonstrated capacity to embrace new models of care, support service redesign, adapt to changing clinical environments, and actively promote a culture of continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated effective clinical communication skills, including competence with information technology, written documentation, verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and the use of technology enhanced or virtual care modalities.
- Proven commitment to contributing to departmental activities, including teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, support of interprofessional learning, and active engagement in clinical research
- Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
