Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking an experienced Patient Safety Officer to play a pivotal role in strengthening clinical governance, incident management and mortality review processes across the District.
This is an influential and highly collaborative role, supporting both Clinical Governance and operational teams to ensure patient safety risks are identified early, escalated appropriately and addressed through robust review and improvement processes.
About the Role
In this role, you will coordinate, monitor, investigate and evaluate patient safety activities, with a strong focus on incident management, Serious Adverse Event Reviews (SAERs) and mortality audits. You will provide expert advice, education and support to managers and clinicians, and contribute to continuous quality and safety improvement across a large and diverse health service.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading and coordinating Serious Adverse Event Reviews and supporting high-quality reporting
• Analysing and reporting on patient safety data using systems such as ims+, QARS and, HACS
• Delivering education and training related to incident management and clinical governance frameworks
• Supporting operational teams in managing adverse events and implementing safety improvements
• Undertaking death audits and contributing to quality and safety policy development
• Working closely with Clinical Governance, executive leaders and frontline staff to drive patient safety outcomes
About You
You are a confident and credible health professional or manager who brings:
• A tertiary qualification in a health discipline or extensive recent clinical experience
• Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality and safety, and incident management
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders
• Proven ability to analyse data and translate insights into meaningful improvement
• High-level organisation, time management and the ability to work with autonomy in a fast-paced environment
• Confidence using a range of digital systems, including Microsoft 365 and clinical quality databases
