Are you passionate about supporting people through lived experience and making a meaningful difference in your community? Join our Alternatives to Emergency Departments (Safe Haven) team and provide culturally safe, recovery-oriented support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers experiencing psychological distress or suicidal crisis in a welcoming, non-clinical environment.

About the Opportunity

This position plays a key role in ensuring continuity of care and enhancing the overall patient experience. In this role you will: 

• Provide compassionate peer support to consumers experiencing suicidal crisis, mental distress and recovery challenges using your lived experience to inspire hope and connection.
• Support consumers to develop recovery and wellness plans that build on their strengths, goals and personal resources.
• Facilitate individual and group-based peer support activities focused on recovery, wellbeing, distress tolerance and resilience.
• Work closely with mental health clinicians, peer workers and community services to support consumers' ongoing recovery journeys.
• Connect consumers with community-based supports including housing, financial assistance, counselling and other wellbeing services.

• Assist consumers to access appropriate care through both Step Up and Step Down pathways, ensuring the right support at the right time

About You

We are looking for someone who has: 

• Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• Demonstrated lived experience of mental health recovery, psychological distress or suicidal crisis and the ability to use this experience to support others.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build respectful and trusting relationships.
• Commitment to recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-centred care.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Understanding of the importance of cultural safety, community connection and holistic wellbeing.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development, supervision and reflective practice.
