- Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads, to work independently as well as part of a team and to work within a hospital setting.
- Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, including historical contexts which may influence Aboriginal health, and national and state policies/strategies relating to Aboriginal health.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
- Knowledge of confidentiality, documentation and information management, relevant legislation, ethics and duty of care, and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment.
- Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (e.g. MS Word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets).
- Knowledge of quality improvement and experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
