What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of a Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia is to provide anaesthesia services, under supervision, as part of the basic training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. 

Provisional Fellows are required to:

  • Extend their clinical assessment knowledge and skills to manage anaesthesia for common medical conditions of moderate complexity and optimise outcomes for patients through appropriate consultation and supervision.

  • Deliver anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms.

  • To perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed.

  • Participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics.

     

 

Where you'll be working

Calvary Mater Newcastle public hospital in Waratah, NSW, is an Affiliated Health Organisation of NSW Health. It is the major cancer care centre for the Hunter New England Local Health District, delivering more than 320,000 occasions of outpatient services and in a excess of 16,000 inpatient treatments per year.  

Calvary Mater Newcastle provides an Emergency Department open 24 hours seven days a week an Intensive Care Unit, and extensive Palliative Care services including the Mercy Hospice. Hunter New England Local Health District’s Mental Health Facility and Breast screen NSW are also located on the Mater campus. 

The Calvary Mater Newcastle is an Affiliated Health Organisation providing services to both public and private patients primarily from the Hunter New England area. Current employees of NSW Health can request to have various leave entitlement balances transferred to Calvary Mater Newcastle on commencement. Leave types may include but not limited to Long Service Leave, Annual Leave and Sick Leave. Applicants are encouraged to discuss this with the Convenor for further information.

Essential Criteria:

  1. Completed a minimum of three postgraduate years and some experience in Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
  2. Able to work in Anaesthesia under supervision and to work weekends and after-hours in the specialty area and work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  3. Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  4. Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  5. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia and a demonstrated interest in clinical audit or research.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
