The Role
This position operates under the direction of the Nursing Unit Manager of the Unit within the Forensic Hospital. All nursing roles in the Forensic Hospital have a reporting responsibility to the Director of Nursing through the Deputy Director of Nursing and After Hours Nurse Managers. The Nursing Unit Manager 1 (NUM1) is responsible for providing clinical leadership in the shift-by-shift delivery of high quality mental health care to patients in the Forensic Hospital whilst managing complex clinical cases.
The NUM1 has advanced skills and knowledge in the specialist field of forensic mental health and will have decision making responsibilities over the delivery of clinical care across the unit, to ensure it reflects the effective integration of therapeutic goals with security requirements. This involves supporting, mentoring and at times directing others in the delivery of clinical care, ensuring daily security and safety requirements are attended and providing leadership and coordination in all emergency situations.
The NUM1 provides strong and consistent leadership through developing cohesive and effective teams and processes to enhance patient outcomes while maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, patients and visitors. The position works collaboratively with other NUM1 roles to maintain a consistently high standard of practice across the Forensic Hospital. Nursing teams in the Forensic Hospital comprise of registered and endorsed enrolled nurses.
The NUM1 must be familiar with the requirements of these roles in order to provide effective leadership.
Our Location, Team, and Service
The Forensic Hospital is a high-secure forensic mental health facility in New South Wales, operated by Justice Health NSW. This facility provides specialist, therapeutic inpatient care for adults and adolescent forensic, correctional, and high-risk civil patients.
A multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing, and allied health professionals provide care across the clinical spectrum, from high dependency and acute care, to long stay and rehabilitation care.

A comprehensive two-week full-time orientation is provided for all new staff commencing at Forensic Hospital, with the next intake dates being 24 March, 26 May and 4 August 2025.
