The East Coast Medical Network (ECMN) will be offering ad hoc recruitment for 3.0 FTE Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) positons. Two FTE will be available from August 2025 – January 2026 and a third from October 2025 – April 2026. All positions are accredited BPT roles and time can count towards training with the RACP.

Where you'll be working

The East Coast Medical Network is dedicated to the training of balanced, well- rounded and competent physicians. Vocationally based training is delivered across 5 locations situated along the spectacular East Coast of New South Wales, including Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney Hospital, The Royal Hospital for Women, Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Shellharbour Hospital. We support our trainees to reach their potential with an interactive and individualised education program that is underpinned by the fundamental tenets of access to opportunity, equality and fairness. The success of

the network is only in part demonstrated by some of the highest pass-rates in the state in the RACP written and clinical examinations, rather, we measure the success of our program by the ability of our graduates to obtain the advanced training positions they desire and the feedback from advanced training programs that they actively seek ECMN graduates for their demonstrated knowledge base, clinical acumen and work ethic.

The ECMN provides a wide range of sub-specialty medical terms in both urban and regional locations. There are no terms of nights. Our written education program augments the RACP run College Learning Series, and is delivered weekly during protected teaching time, with a focus on direct interaction with experts in the field. We videoconference these tutorials to all our peripheral sites from the 1st week of training. Our clinical preparation program is comprehensive, with several assigned activities per week including practice short and long cases, dedicated Neurology teaching, clinical investigation workshops and structured communication tutorials. Our professional development program aims to expand the skill sets of our medical trainees, with tutorials in leadership skills, managing JMOs, communication, curriculum vitae preparation and job interview skills. There are significant opportunities to become involved in teaching and research, as our network has strong ties with the University of New South Wales.

More information about the EMN can be found on our website at About Us - East Coast Medical Network

The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.

Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants. Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures. BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.

BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:

  • Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans
  • Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers
  •  Document the progress of patients in multiple settings
  • Prescribe medications tailored to patients’ needs and conditions
  • Transfer care of patients
  • Choose, organise and interpret investigations
  • Assess and manage acutely unwell patients
  • Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures
