Where you'll be working

Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.
Intensive care unit in Westmead hospital comprises of 46 beds including 10 beds for post cardiac surgical patients. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow and kidney transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures.

What you'll be doing

WSLHD - Advanced Trainee - Intensive Care

This position is appropriate for medical officers (at the commencement of the position PGY 5 and above) who are interested in training in intensive care medicine. The position is suitable for advanced trainees of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). The clinical role allocated to the advanced trainee may vary depending on the experience and seniority of the advanced trainee and operational requirements of the ICU.
The purpose of the position is to provide effective clinical management and excellent care to critically ill patients under the direct or indirect supervision of an Intensive Care Specialist. Trainees will be expected to develop expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment, and to participate in the core training program of the College of Intensive Care Medicine.
 
Under the supervision of intensive care consultants, advanced trainees may lead a team of junior medical officers inside ICU and on outreach service. During night shifts advanced trainees may be the most senior ICU medical staff on-site.
 
POSITION SUMMARY AND LOCAL BACKGROUND
Westmead Hospital is the principal referral hospital for western Sydney, renowned for its comprehensive, highly specialised and complex services provided to its community, statewide and nationally.
Patients come to Westmead Hospital for treatment of major trauma, bone marrow transplant, renal transplant, pancreas (islet) cell transplant, neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, oral healthcare, radiation oncology, cardiology interventional services, cardiothoracic surgery, advanced gastroenterology, deep brain stimulation, neonatal intensive care, and services for adult eating disorders, complex epilepsy, complex dermatology, adult cystic fibrosis, and Huntington disease.
Intensive care unit in Westmead hospital comprises of 49 beds, including 12 beds for post cardiac surgical patients. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow and kidney transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures.
All required external rotations for the purpose of training with the college of intensive care medicine (CICM) are available for this position. These include anaesthetics, medicine, paediatric ICU, rural ICU. Allocation of rotations will be made following each annual recruitment.




  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
  3. Completion of four (4) years post graduate experience at commencement of position, with a minimum of one year work experience in an ICU. Completion of CICM primary exam or equivalent.
  4. Clinical experience, cognitive skills, and basic technical skills appropriate for managing critically ill patients independently within a supervised complex clinical environment.
  5. Demonstrated time management and problem-solving skills in the clinical setting.
  6. Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  7. Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education, quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management.
  8. Demonstrated career goal to undertake further training in intensive care medicine or other critical care specialities.
