Join Our Team at St George Hospital.

We are seeking an Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) to join our dedicated Diversity Inclusion and Belonging team in a permanent part-time role, 12 hours per week. This role will work alongside a permanent fulltime AHLO staff member to provide culturally safe and person-centred care to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients accessing St George Hospital.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialist area, supporting patients, their families, and carers in their hospital journey. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing culturally safe, person-centred care and connection as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT).  

Key responsibilities include:
•    Providing emotional, social and cultural support, assistance, and care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients admitted to St George Hospital.
•    Collaborating closely with medical, nursing, social work, allied health, and pastoral care teams to ensure integrated care delivery and culturally safe healthcare.
•    Develop partnerships and linkages with health services and non-health service providers to improve care and provide appropriate and culturally sensitive care.
We are looking for an Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer who is passionate about supporting mob and families through health transitions.

Workdays can be flexible, working 12 hours across the week, option for weekend work too. You will be supported and connected with the Aboriginal Health Directorate in the district, have access to professional development opportunities and clinical and cultural supervision.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads, to work independently as well as part of a team and to work within a hospital setting.
  3. Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, including historical contexts which may influence Aboriginal health, and national and state policies/strategies relating to Aboriginal health.
  5. Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
  6. Knowledge of confidentiality, documentation and information management, relevant legislation, ethics and duty of care, and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment.
  7. Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (e.g. MS Word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets).
  8. Knowledge of quality improvement and experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
