Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. The Aboriginal Health Worker / Practitioner is part of the Aboriginal Maternal & infant Health Service (AMIHS) in WSLHD which aims to improve access to maternal health services for pregnant Aboriginal women or women having an Aboriginal baby. This is a key position in establishing trust and building relationships between the Aboriginal community and AMIHS in WSLHD and is responsible for establishing effective local partnerships to address barriers and facilitate access to health services for Aboriginal women or women having an Aboriginal baby and their families.
The Aboriginal Health Worker / Practitioner will work in collaboration with the AMIHS Midwife and other Aboriginal Health staff including the New Directions Aboriginal Mothers and Babies Program. The position will also be expected to work collaboratively with antenatal and maternity services across WSLHD and with other key internal and external service providers including local Aboriginal services and programs.
The Aboriginal Health Worker / Practitioner will provide a variety of services including but not limited to advocacy, support, liaison, referral and health promotion and assistance with transport where required to facilitate access to services that addresses the social, emotional and cultural needs of the patient/client. Community engagement and community development are also key components of the model.
The Aboriginal Health Worker is a non-clinical role. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will provide a range of direct clinical services as defined by the Aboriginal Health Practitioner Scope of Practice and as demonstrated through competency assessment.
AMIHS is based at the Aboriginal Health Hub on the grounds of Mt Druitt Hospital and reports operationally through Integrated & Community Health.

- Qualification: Aboriginal Health Worker: Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification. Aboriginal Health Practitioner: Hold a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice)

Selection Criteria:
- This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- In this role, being a woman is also a genuine occupational qualification as authorised by Section 31 respectively of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.
- Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification in a health-related field relevant to the role. For an Aboriginal Health Practitioner holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and a current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) .
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with established links to the local Aboriginal community in western Sydney.
- Demonstrated understanding of issues impacting on Aboriginal women and women having an Aboriginal baby and their infants and and / or experience in providing social support, linkage to services, group work, community education, advocacy and health promotion with the Aboriginal community.
- Demonstrated ability to provide cultural brokerage with individuals, families and communities; cultural guidance for the other members of the team; and, facilitate respectful and culturally safe access for individuals, families and communities.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team and can demonstrate good oral and written communication skills and computer skills.
- Current driver’s licence valid in NSW and willing to use for work purposes.
