What you'll be doing
The Department provides a wide-range of Cytogenetic/Cytogenomic testing services for prenatal diagnosis and investigation of postnatal constitutional chromosomal disorders and paediatric and adult cancers. 
 
The primary purpose of the role is to supervise and perform cytogenetic/cytogenomic and molecular investigations for paediatric and adult cancers; e.g. leukaemias, lymphoproliferative disorders and solid tumour. A variety of techniques are utilised, including tissue culture, G-band karyotyping, fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH), SNP chromosome microarray, reverse-transcriptase PCR, real-time quantitative PCR and next generation RNA Sequencing. The source of material investigated may include human cells or DNA  and RNA from blood, bone marrow, solid tumour,  or formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded (FFPE) archival tissue. Additional techniques used include bright-field and fluorescent-microscopy, automated digital image capture Artificial-Intelligence (AI)-assisted karyotyping and analysis (MetaSystems).
 
The successful applicant will be appointed as a Senior Hospital Scientist (107HSCS) working with the Senior Scientist management team with responsibilities related to Cytogenetics and SNP chromosome microarray analysis including verification of results and laboratory reports for different cancer types. Additional responsibilities include management and supervision of laboratory diagnostic work and staff, training and support of staff professional development, trouble-shooting of technical issues and failures of testing, , participation in development and validation of new and/or emerging technologies for cancer diagnostics [as required’, liaison and communication with referring clinicians related to reasons for testing, and ensuring compliance with laboratory quality management systems and regulatory frameworks, in accordance with NATA, NPAAC and other local and international laboratory best practices.

The role would be well-suited to a cancer Cytogenetics/genomics clinical scientist with a broad scientific skill set, is an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with excellent leadership skills, who can work collaboratively within a team to promote a centre of excellence for laboratory diagnostics as standard of care for patients with cancer.
  1. A recognised professional qualification in Clinical Cytogenetics, Cytogenomics or molecular genetics eg FHGSA, MHGSA, FFSc RCPA [Genetic Pathology] or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
  2. Demonstrated expertise in human cancer cytogenetics/genomics, including proven ability to prepare cytogenetic/genomics specimens for G-band karyotyping, FISH, PCR, SNP chromosome microarray and next-generation sequencing.
  3. Excellent written & verbal communication skills in English with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
  4. Ability to work in a team environment and develop and maintain strong collaboartive, professional relationships with stakeholders
  5. Aptitude in computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite, databases and data entry, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS); eg. Millenium PathNet.
  6. A record of scientific publication in peer reviewed journals in relevant fields, or demonstrated experience in oral presentation at a Scientific Meeting, and/or demonstrated skills in scientific writing.
  7. Demonstrated experience in a senior scientist position within a diagnostic laboratory, including laboratory and personnel management.
  8. Experience of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance Programs, and laboratory accreditation process, according to regulatory frameworss including ISO15189, NATA and NPAAC.
