About the Role
Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking a qualified and motivated Clinical Coder to join the Clinical Information Department.
In this role, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely coding of inpatient episodes of care, ensuring compliance with Australian Coding Standards, supporting Activity Based Funding outcomes, and contributing to the integrity and quality of clinical data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and Australian Coding Standards
  • Maintain coding quality, accuracy, and consistency across a broad and complex casemix
  • Review clinical documentation and clarify coding queries with clinicians and other healthcare staff
  • Complete cancer registration notifications
  • Collect and report coding activity statistics and meet personal coding benchmarks
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement, and professional development activities
  • Collaborate with peers to support knowledge sharing and best practice

What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Clinical Coder with:

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and Australian Coding Standards
  • Experience interpreting complex clinical documentation to assign accurate codes
  • Previous hospital-based coding experience, with understanding of DRG assignment and Activity Based Funding
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and time-management skills
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and quality improvement

Essential Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Clinical Coding Course or Bachelor of Health Information Management (or equivalent), or extensive hospital coding experience

Desirable:

  • Experience with electronic medical records (eMR)
  • Experience managing documentation queries 
  • Participation in audits or data quality initiatives
  • Exposure to a broad casemix
  • Experience using Performance Indicators to monitor and maintain coding quality (PICQ)

Hours of Work:

  • Monday to Friday
  • 8:00am – 4:30pm
  • Flexible working arrangements available, including remote options (pending experience)

No routine travel is required.
