What you'll be doing
The Centre for Kidney Research is located at Kids Research, The Children’s Hospitals at Westmead and focuses on works on nephrology, biostatistics epidemiology, health economics and psychology.
 
The research officer role is primarily focused on supporting kidney trials and observational studies through facilitating and coordinating specific research activity under the direction of the Trial and operations Manager(s).
 
The research officer will actively contribute to the provision of high-quality research activities, including patient recruitment, preparation for the human ethics committee, generation of annual research reports, data entry, database management, production of and/or contribution to research data, and written preparation for conference presentations, manuscripts, and funding applications.
 
This position is part of several teams that co-ordinate and run trials and observational studies, not limited to the examples included below:
 
The OPEN (Optimising Prednisolone dosE in childhood Nephrotic syndrome) trial aims to investigate the best dosage for relapses of nephrotic syndrome and will also incorporate economic evaluations and patient-reported outcomes to provide a comprehensive assessment of the treatment’s impact.

The BEAT-BK trial, using a novel adaptive design, will generate high quality and definitive evidence on the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of immunosuppression reduction/modification strategies including the use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) on polyomavirus infections BKPyV in kidney and simultaneous pancreas and kidney (SPK) transplant recipients.

TACKLE-IT is an international multi-centre, single-blind randomised controlled trial. The main objective is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high versus low doses of IV Methylprednisolone and oral prednisone taper in treating acute T-cell–mediated rejection (TCMR) can occur in kidney and simultaneous pancreas and kidney (SPK) transplant recipients.
 
The Kids with CKD (KCAD) study is a multicentre, longitudinal cohort study that aims to improve understanding of the health, cognitive, genetic, academic and quality of life outcomes in children, adolescents and young adults with kidney disease. In this study, we aim to examine the impact of kidney disease on families’ and young adults’ financial wellbeing, aiming to identify the best ways to support those caring for children and young adults living with kidney disease.
 
ELIMINATE is an international multicentre prospective cohort study which aims to establish the most suitable parental donor for kidney transplantation. The study involves immunological profiling for kidney transplant recipients and determining its association with outcomes, and to see if this is modified by parent status.
  1. Degree in Health Science or Public Health or relevant field, or, equivalent work experience or a combination of study and work experience
  2. Proven excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with patients, staff and affiliated organisations
  3. Experience working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  4. Demonstrated ability to organise, prioritise work and initiative to work with minimal supervision
  5. Demonstrated success conducting research activities with minimal supervision, with identifiable research output
  6. Familiarity with research data governance and human ethics principles and their application to the analysis of data
  7. Highly proficient in computer programs and experience with managing multiple databases
  8. Demonstrated ability to travel between the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network Randwick and Westmead sites, as directed
