An exciting opportunity exists to join the Resident Medical Officers at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
"ISLHD is an accredited provider of the Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) Program, which provides an alternative pathway for IMGs to AMC Part 2 Clinical Exam.  All candidates to the ISLHD WBA Program are current employees with a contract that incorporates the duration of the program.  Selection to the WBA Program is separate to the workplace recruitment process, is highly competitive and not guaranteed. Applicants are accessed via a merit-based process. Candidates require a rotational RMO or Emergency Department position to apply."


Where you'll be working
Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra and Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed base of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

The Bulli Aged Care Centre of Excellence opened in August 2020 and is an innovative collaboration between ISLHD and the Illawarra Retirement Trust. The new $50.4 million Centre of Excellence has been specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the local population.  The project included the construction of a new facility opposite the existing Bulli Hospital, to transform the site into a centre of excellence focussed on geriatric medicine. Bulli Hospital works closely with the Aged Care Specialist team at Wollongong Hospital to ensure a safe and timely transfer of patients who have completed an acute episode of care and require additional assessment, Sub-Acute medical management and planning for ongoing care needs.  Bulli Hospital also provides outpatient Geriatric Services via the Geriatric Outpatient Therapy unit.  This service is supported by a Geriatrician, Advanced Trainee in Aged Care, specialist nursing staff and Allied Health. The outpatient unit houses a therapy area and assessment area for patient appointments.

Shoalhaven Hospital is a busy rural hospital which employs over 1,000 staff and is the main acute care hospital for the Shoalhaven region, providing emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services.  Shoalhaven Hospital has an Intensive Care Unit focusing on high dependency and coronary patients, Children’s Ward and Maternity Unit as well as a purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre and sub-acute Mental Health Unit.

Shellharbour Hospital is a 197 bed, acute facility providing a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services. The inpatient services include aged care, medical, surgical, mental health and acute medical assessment inpatient beds, plus a day surgery unit. The hospital also provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medical, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, as well as adolescent and adult mental health services.

What you'll be doing
The Resident Medical Officer will provide effective, safe medical care to patients under supervision, as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The RMO may be allocated to various hospitals across the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District including Bulli, Coledale, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven and Wollongong Hospitals as well as GP rotations in Milton.  The RMO will have a more senior doctor on site at all times and will undertake patient care consistent with the level of clinical competency and experience of the appointed trainee whilst developing broad skills in clinical decision making and practice.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. At least one year working as a medical officer.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
  4. Preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours and overtime rosters.
  5. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
  6. Ability to move between services and geographical locations to deliver patient care (including rural locations).
  7. Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education.
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role.
