About the role:

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Nurse Practitioner is a new and exciting position within our PICU team. In this advanced and extended clinical role, the Nurse Practitioner will be supported to deliver high-level, patient-centred care alongside the junior medical workforce and under the supervision of Paediatric Intensive Care Consultants.

This role includes the clinical assessment and management of critically unwell children within the PICU, as well as contributing to a clinical outreach service for deteriorating paediatric patients across John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals. The position operates on a 12-hour rotating roster, including night shifts and weekends, offering both variety and the opportunity to make a significant impact in paediatric critical care.

Where you’ll be working:

We are seeking a Paediatric ICU Endorsed or Transitional Nurse Practitioner to join our fun, passionate, and highly skilled Paediatric Intensive Care team at John Hunter Hospital.

As one of only three tertiary Paediatric Hospitals in NSW, John Hunter Children’s Hospital is a centre of excellence in paediatric care. Co-located with John Hunter Hospital, the primary tertiary referral centre for trauma in Northern NSW, our PICU plays a vital role in delivering critical care services to the region.

Established as a stand-alone unit in 2017, our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit has continued to expand in both capacity and complexity, caring for a diverse range of complex medical and surgical paediatric patients. The unit also provides expert advice and management for critically unwell children across the Hunter New England region and the broader Northern Child Health Network.

This is an exciting time to become part of our team as we continue to grow, expand services, and plan for the development of a new state-of-the-art PICU, set to open in 2026.

We are looking for someone who shares our commitment to excellence and brings a genuine passion for paediatric critical care.
