Looking for an exciting opportunity in Child Protection Paediatrics? Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) Service is looking for a skilled specialist Paediatrician, eligible for registration in New South Wales for the above position, to join our multidisciplinary VAN team as the PARVAN Staff Specialist Paediatric Clinical Lead.

About the Role
This role provides clinical service delivery and leadership across all forms of paediatric violence, abuse and neglect services within NSLHD. It contributes to the teaching and training of staff in the clinical areas encompassed within PARVAN services in NSLHD. The position will further develop research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within the District to ensure the provision of integrated, holistic and client-focused PARVAN services by a capable and confident workforce. Interested applicants will either have completed forensic medicine training or be studying towards forensic medicine qualifications
within 6 months of commencing in the role e.g. Graduate Diploma in Forensic Medicine (4 semesters part-time; 8 subjects) or Graduate Certificate in Forensic Medicine (2 semesters part-time; 4 subjects); NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) vocational medical and forensic training including Child Sexual Assault Skills, Forensic Photography, Supervised Medico-Legal (including report writing and presentation of evidence specific to the PANOC context) or equivalent.

Purpose of the Position

Provide clinical management and treatment of patients under your care in a Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within the District. The position will provide specialised clinical support and advice to Prevention and Response to Violence, Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) services throughout Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD), specifically in the areas of child sexual assault, child protection (including children under 10 years with Problematic and Harmful Sexual Behaviours (PHSB)) and domestic and family violence.

The position of Staff Specialist in the VAN service is part of a multidisciplinary VAN team. The role of this position is to ensure the delivery of high quality medical services to children when there are concerns that a child may have been abused or neglected. The Paediatric PARVAN Clinical lead staff specialist will provide forensic medical assessments for child sexual assault, physical abuse and neglect. The role will also include clinical service and consultation toward the medical assessment of children under 10 years with PHSB.

The position will provide clinical and consultative service toward the medical assessment of child sexual assault, physical abuse and neglect cases both in and out of hours. This role will contribute to the teaching and training of staff in the clinical areas encompassed within PARVAN services and provide a consultative and leadership role to the Emergency Physicians, Acute and Community Paediatricians within NSLHD in the area of VAN. The position will develop and implement local systems to monitor, review and audit child protection presentations and further develop research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within the District to ensure the provision of integrated, holistic and client-focused PARVAN services by a capable and confident workforce.

This position is temporary with the possibility of temporary extension based on performance, funding and need



Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded fellowship within 6 months maybe considered.

  3. Demonstrated experience in paediatric clinical work suitable for this position at a specialist level.
  4. Demonstrated  high-level of knowledge and expertise in the areas of domestic violence, child abuse and neglect and child sexual assault including recognized appropriate medical forensic skills/ training in sexual assault and abuse. Completed forensic medicine training or be studying towards forensic medicine qualifications within 6 months of commencing in the role.
  5. Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  6. Demonstrated research experience and program evaluation.
  7. Commitment to participate in peer review, quality improvement programs and change management to ensure excellence.
  8. Demonstrated excellent communication with an ability to consult, influence, negotiate and maintain positive relationships with the community, clinicians, management, staff and senior executives within NSLHD, interagency partners, and other stakeholders.
