About us:
Hunter Brain Injury Service (HBIS) is 1 of 15 state-wide specialist rehabilitation services for compensable and non-compensable adult clients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.

Whilst the service is based in Bar Beach Newcastle, outpatient, outreach, and community residential care is provided to those who live in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Lower & Upper Hunter, Port Stephens, Greater Taree, and Central Coast areas.

In addition to the above catchment areas, the 5-bed community residential transition living unit (TLU) also supports clients from other regional/rural areas (e.g., Port Macquarie/ Coffs Harbour, Forbes, etc) when they have a family member or significant other who lives in the catchment area as there are only 7 transition living units in the state. The facility is a stand-alone building, parking onsite, multiple counselling and interview spaces, large outdoor area including gardens, a courtyard and yarning circle.

The HBIS team is specially trained to clinically support, and case manage people who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. The team includes Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, Neuropsychologists, Dietitians, Clinical Psychologists, Rehabilitation Assistants, Administration and Housekeeping Staff. There is also a visiting Rehabilitation Medical Specialist and a Neuropsychiatrist. This is a motivated and driven to achieve the most successful outcome for clients; willingness to always deliver better care and services; professional and enjoy social activities outside of work in the social club.

About the role:

  • This role will see you provide occupational therapy interventions and specialised case management to clients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.
  • You will be working within a specialised transdisciplinary Allied Health lead team, which operates in an award-winning service.
  • You will be provided with education opportunities to acquire and develop case management skills to support compensable and non-compensable individuals with complex clinical, functional, cognitive, behaviour/mood and psychosocial needs.
  • There will be networking opportunities to connect with Specialist Brain Injury Clinicians at various state-wide discipline specific events. As well as opportunities to build connections with public & private health, social employment and education networks.
  • A typical day or week could include (but is not limited to) therapeutic assessment, testing and interventions, development of therapy programs, engaging with other agencies/providers to support a client’s community reintegration and return to work, conducting group education / support etc. You would work mainly from the facility but also get the chance to get out in the community with clients.

  • You will be supported by the Service Manager, Clinical Co-ordinator and other Occupational Therapists who work in Brain Injury Units across NSW. You will also have access to statewide resources and training to increase your skill and knowledge to support clients, families and staff.
  • Orientation will occur during the first couple weeks with the Service Manager and Clinical Coordinator. You will also get to spend time with each of the different disciplines and work side-by side with the other Occupational Therapist.


About you:

  • You are passionate about supporting clients to achieve their goals after sustaining a brain injury.
  • You enjoy working with clients following traumatic brain injury and bring experience from previous clinical roles in this area.
  • You take a holistic, innovative, and empowering approach to care acknowledging the wider social, psychological, societal, and cultural factors that may affect the client during their rehabilitation and transition back to home, the community, and work environments.
  • You value integrity, teamwork, empathy, inclusion and fairness. A master in rapport building, communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and leadership. Driven and motivated to deliver results and high-quality care whilst remaining calm, flexible, and adaptable in challenging situations.
  • You are a passionate interdisciplinary team member who actively contributes to a positive team culture and works from a clear ethical and values-based framework.
  • You are savvy in developing working relationships within and outside the team.
  • You are enthusiastic about quality improvement and your professional development.


Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Therapy and registration with AHPRA.
  • Current eligibility to drive in NSW and the ability and willingness to travel for work purposes which may involve driving long distances.
