The One Health Branch in Health Protection NSW works closely to coordinate with a range of internal and external stakeholders to prevent exposure to, and minimise the impact of, infectious diseases. Some of these stakeholders include NSW Public Health Units, Department of Primary Industries, NSW Food Authority and other States and Territories.
The Food and Water-borne Diseases team is responsible for developing and implementing processes and procedures for state-wide public health surveillance, reporting, prevention and control of public health threats (some of which include Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, Legionella and more).
Health Manager level 3, starting salary from $127,150 - $144,444 plus Super, with a 38-hour work week.
What you will do
The Epidemiologist/Senior Policy Officer will use sound epidemiological principles to analyse the impact of prevention and control policies, develop and refine strategies to maximise the outputs of policies programs and provide high-level advice to the public health network and key stakeholders especially regarding foodborne diseases. The position will respond to complex, state and national disease outbreaks, including the provisions of sound technical advice to minimise the on-going risk to the public.
About you
We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:
- Post graduate qualifications in public health, applied epidemiology, behavioural science or related discipline and/or relevant experience in disease control, preferably foodborne disease epidemiology
- Extensive experience in the investigation and control of public health issues, including experience in the management of complex outbreak investigations.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in critical policy analysis, development and review.
- Highly-developed conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information rapidly and accurately.
- Good organisational skills and capacity to deliver high quality products within agreed timeframes.
- Highly-developed inter-personal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively independently

- Demonstrated skills and experience in critical policy analysis, development and review, including the delivery of expert policy advice, application of evaluation frameworks, and provision of evidence-based recommendations on complex public health issues, with experience in environmental sources of disease highly desirable.
- Highly-developed conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information rapidly and accurately.
- Good organisational skills and capacity to deliver high quality products within agreed timeframes.
- Highly-developed inter-personal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively independently and with stakeholders with competing priorities to produce high-quality products, achieve mutual outcomes and meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience in plain English communication; experience in scientific writing for publications in peer-reviewed journals is desirable.
