Introducing the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit (NAHMU), a fresh, purpose built 10-bed facility dedicated to supporting adolescents aged 12 to 17 who are navigating complex and severe mental health challenges. This state-of-the-art inpatient unit is the newest chapter in the Child, Youth and Family Mental Health (CYFMH) story, expanding its reach to provide compassionate, specialised care from the earliest stages of life through to young adulthood. NAHMU isn’t just a place of healing, it’s a vital step forward in empowering young people and their families with the support they need, when they need it most.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District is seeking an experienced and passionate Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit at Nepean Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a specialist multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering high‑quality, recovery‑oriented mental health care to young people and their families. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert clinical leadership and advanced nursing care to adolescents with complex mental health needs, ensuring they receive compassionate, evidence‑based support during a critical stage of their lives.

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will play a central role in clinical decision‑making, care planning and service improvement. You will contribute to comprehensive mental health assessments, risk management and coordinated care, working closely with psychiatry, psychology, allied health and social work professionals. Your leadership will extend to supporting staff development, fostering a positive team culture and contributing to ongoing quality improvement, education and policy initiatives that strengthen the service.

What you will bring to the role

  1. Current registration as a Registered Nurse Division 1 with AHPRA. Relevant post-registration qualifications and at least 3 years’ experience working in Mental Health/Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate.
  2. Demonstrated capacity to provide effective nursing care that is person centred, family inclusive and culturally sensitive to people accessing health services.
  3. Demonstrated ability to perform in a clinical leadership role and use critical thinking as it relates to the delivery of advanced evidenced based Nursing care.
  4. Demonstrated effective communications written and verbal skills.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  6. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision maintaining involvement within the wider multidisciplinary team.
  7. Ability to work a flexible roster, day evening or night shift across all days of the week according to the unit or team requirements.
