Hunter Brain Injury Service (HBIS) is 1 of 15 state-wide specialist rehabilitation services for compensable and non-compensable adult clients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.
Whilst the service is based in Bar Beach Newcastle, outpatient, outreach, and community residential care is provided to those who live in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Lower & Upper Hunter, Port Stephens, Greater Taree, and Central Coast areas.
In addition to the above catchment areas, the 5-bed community residential transition living unit (TLU) also supports clients from other regional/rural areas (e.g., Port Macquarie/ Coffs Harbour, Forbes, etc) when they have a family member or significant other who lives in the catchment area as there are only 7 transition living units in the state. The facility is a stand-alone building, parking onsite, multiple counselling and interview spaces, large outdoor area including gardens, a courtyard and yarning circle.
The HBIS team is specially trained to clinically support, and case manage people who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. The team includes Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, Neuropsychologists, Dietitians, Clinical Psychologists, Rehabilitation Assistants, Administration and Housekeeping Staff. There is also a visiting Rehabilitation Medical Specialist and a Neuropsychiatrist. About the role:
You will be working from the Hunter Brain Injury Service alongside the multi-disciplinary team and another experienced part-time Neuropsychologist. You will work with the team to prioritise and plan your workload and manager your time to provide service to clients. You will have an office space and enjoy connecting with other team members throughout the day.
In this role you will:
- Provide recommendations with respect to a client's capacity, e.g., for work, driving, financial management and guardianship; and advise on strategies to compensate for cognitive impairments for clients, families, and therapists.
- Complete neuropsychological report writing and provide verbal and written feedback on assessments to clients, their significant others, and carers.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of rehabilitation programs for funded and non-funded adult clients, in collaboration with team members using the NSW Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program (BIRP) case management model of care.
- Negotiate and act as an advocate for clients when working collaboratively with various service providers and agencies to deliver a person-centred community-focused rehabilitation program with a strong focus on reintegration to the home, community and work environments while recognizing the nature and extent of impairments and disability.
- Liaise with and provide advice to other team members and external agencies regarding how to maximize a client’s participation and function taking into account the clients' cognitive, psychological and behavioural issues.
- Prioritise workload to balance client contact and a large administrative load consisting of comprehensive reports and detailed rehabilitation plans whilst maintaining adequate client files and records in accordance with the policies and procedures of HNELHD, NSW Health and other statutory authorities such as iCare, NDIS, CTP, WorkCover, child protection and other agencies.
You will be supported by the Service Manager, Clinical Co-ordinator and other Neuropsychologists who work in Brain Injury Units across NSW. You will also have access to statewide resources and training to increase your skill and knowledge to support clients, families and staff. Orientation will occur during the first couple weeks with the Service Manager and Clinical Coordinator. You will also get to spend time with each of the different disciplines and work side-by side with the other Neuropsychologist.

Requirements:
- Masters degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from an APAC accredited course with current full registration with Psychology Board of Australia with endorsement for Clinical neuropsychology.
- Current eligibility to drive in NSW and the ability and willingness to travel for work purposes which may involve driving long distances.
