Aboriginal Identified SafeWayz Clinician
Be part of the dynamic and supportive Counselling Violence Prevention & Response Team (CVPR) in Child Youth & Family Services. This position will work with the SafeWayz Coordinator and other program providers to respond to children under 10 years with problematic and harmful sexual behaviours. The position works closely with other Aboriginal identified positions across the CVPR team providing a response to violence abuse and neglect and is supported by cultural and professional supervision and a tailored professional development plan. What you'll be doing
This role is part of a program called Safe Wayz which coordinates an integrated response for children under the age of criminal responsibility (currently 10 years in NSW) with problematic or harmful sexual behaviours (PHSBs). Safe Wayz adopts a strength-based, family- focused and culturally centred trauma-informed approach to working with children and families to help prevent behaviours from escalating.
SESLHD seeks to provide a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal families and communities. This role will be part of a local Safe Wayz Program team will be in the Counselling Violence Prevention & Response team. The program team will include one Aboriginal-identified role, and one role that is not Aboriginal-identified. The team will be supported through a State-wide clinical network, who will provide clinical and cultural connections, and support in undertaking this work. As an Aboriginal Safe Wayz Clinician you will have access to individual cultural supervision.
This role will coordinate primary prevention initiatives, provide early support for children and families to address behaviours when they are first identified, and coordinate pathways into specialist counselling services for children and families who need them. The role will hold a small clinical case load. The role will also coordinate cultural consultation to support non-Aboriginal clinicians working with Aboriginal children and families.
This role will have a professional development plan in place that will provide the opportunity for work-based development which allows for progression through the Award levels in accordance with the position holder’s skill acquisition.

- This is an identified Aboriginal position. (an applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 NSW). Relevant qualification in Bachelor of Social Work which provides eligibility for membership to Australian Association of Social Workers or Degree in Psychology with full registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia or Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) Aboriginal Pathway Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal Specialist Trauma Counselling.
- Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal community connections, engagement and collaboration to affect outcomes with an understanding of intergenerational trauma, contextual and causal factors for violence, abuse and neglect and the principles of cultural safety.
- Demonstrated understanding and skills in child centred, family focussed counselling, support and case management to address problematic or harmful sexual behaviours with young children and their carers.
- Demonstrated ability to provide culturally responsive counselling services to individuals and their families and demonstrated understanding of the legal and policy framework governing child protection in NSW
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills in combination with a demonstrated ability to work as part of a small therapeutic team.
- Demonstrated experience participating in and/or leading of quality improvement activities and service development and evaluation.
- Demonstrated commitment to clinical and cultural supervision and professional education and if relevant to application, experience providing clinical supervision and leading education and teaching to staff and/or students.
- Current NSW drivers licence and willingness to travel in the course of employment.
