The Genetic Pathology Department at The Sydney Children's Hospital at Westmead are seeking a temporary 0.4FTE (16hours per week) Staff Specialist to join their team as soon as possible through to 30 June 2028.

 

The primary purpose and roles of the Staff Specialist in Biochemical Genetic Pathology are: 

- To provide high quality diagnostic, consultative, procedural and on-call specialty services in Biochemical Genetic Pathology to the Sydney Children's Hospital Network, and to participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the Staff Specialists (State) Award. 

- To provide either in conjunction with another biochemical genetic pathologist, full-time, on-site medical supervision according to NPAAC requirements to the laboratories performing biochemical genetic testing at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. 
To provide clinical input of all aspects of the NSW statewide laboratory services of Biochemical Genetics and the NSW Newborn Screening Program 

- To contribute to service planning including selection and training of staff and provision of educational materials


To contribute to selection and validation/verification of new analytical assays

Promote, coordinate and participate in quality activities within the Biochemical Genetics and Newborn screening laboratories

The Staff Specialist will ensure a high standard of professional performance and, where required, the encouragement of an academic environment which supports research and development

To work collaboratively with the NBS and BG principal hospital scientists to represents the services at local, national and international levels.

To provide collaborative support and cross-cover, where applicable, for other staff specialist pathologists, in particular paediatric chemical pathology and medical genomics

Provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff.

Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience.  The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.  The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment.  No remuneration is attached to the University appointment.  The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.

 

 

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Biochemical Genetic Pathology, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated contemporary clinical knowledge and technical expertise within the specialty of Genetic Pathology (RCPA scope of practice – biochemical genetics).
  3. Demonstrated laboratory experience relevant to the diagnosis and long term monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism, as well as the range of disorders detected by newborn screening. Demonstrated willingness or experience in working across multiple laboratories.
  4. Proven ability to work as a team member with effective communication and interpersonal skills and adaptability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  5. Demonstrated personal qualities including effective communication skills, motivation, initiative, time management and commitment to professional development.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education and staff training for staff on-site plus those requiring training in State-wide services, as well as commitment to basic, applied or clinical research and quality improvement.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to the principles of clinical quality management and continuous improvement and contemporary knowledge of National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) Standards and NATA accreditation processes.
  8. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
