About the Opportunity
An exciting opportunity: an innovative, specialist mental health service for children and young people in Out-of-Home Care across NSW.
We’re seeking a passionate Senior Speech Pathologist to join the dynamic, multidisciplinary team behind the Elver Program—a traumainformed mental health initiative delivered by South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) in partnership with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).
The Elver Program provides comprehensive developmental and mental health assessments, interventions, and complex case consultations for children and young people in Out-of-Home Care across NSW. These include those in residential care, foster care, and family-based settings— many of whom face barriers to accessing mainstream services.
About the Role
As a Senior Speech Pathologist, you’ll:
- Deliver communication assessments and interventions tailored to children’s trauma and developmental needs.
- Collaborate closely with professionals across psychiatry, occupational therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work.
- Contribute to care coordination, consultation, and training across settings including clinics, homes, communities, and via telehealth.
- Support children who are under 12, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or unable to access mainstream services.

What You'll be Doing
The position is responsible for leading, guiding and managing the delivery of speech pathology services to children and young people who present with complex and chronic mental health, trauma and attachment issues related to their history of abuse and neglect. As a specialist senior clinician, the speech pathologist is responsible for overseeing and providing an efficient and effective service through the application of high-level clinical expertise and knowledge in the management of clients where language, social communication, literacy and/or speech deficits are the primary function issue. In the role as a clinical specialist, the speech pathologist is also responsible for providing district-wide consultative services within their area of clinical expertise. They will also contribute to senior departmental duties including clinical supervision, leading quality improvement activities, participation in service development and other administrative responsibilities as required.

SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services provide comprehensive, community-based mental health care across South Western Sydney.
These services cater to different age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and older persons, ensuring specialised care throughout various life stages. The multidisciplinary teams offer a range of supports, including mental health assessments, crisis intervention, care coordination, and therapy. They work closely with inpatient services, GPs, and other community organisations to provide holistic care.

- Must hold a bachelor or post graduate degree in speech pathology which provides eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia.
- Extensive post graduate experience in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and related learning difficulties for young people in the preschool and school-aged cohorts, independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff and/or students, and providing consultation and education to colleagues and external parties that adheres to EBP principles.
- Demonstrated leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of local service delivery incorporating the quality improvement process.
- Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
