Welcome to Southern NSW Local Health District

The Queanbeyan Hospital is seeking experienced and enthusiastic Staff Specialists or VMOs  to join the Emergency Department team.

So much to explore in the Southern NSW region

The majestic Snowy Mountains, the sparkling Sapphire Coast, the verdant Yass Valley, the Great Dividing Range and the Southern Tablelands – all highlight the unique area that is the Southern NSW region. You’ll find a thriving beef and dairy industry that began in the 1850s in Bega, the cheese capital of Australia. In Goulburn, the Big Merino is a symbol of the 200-year-old local wool industry.

Follow the oyster trail from Bermagui to Wonboyn; fish, surf and kayak in Bateman’s Bay; spot platypus in Bombala; see the remnants of early pioneer life in Delegate; marvel at the Snowy Hydro dams in Cooma and Khancoban; visit the Mogo Zoo; ski, mountain bike or hike in Kosciuszko National Park; and pan for gold or pick some cherries in Young. Resident wildlife includes kangaroos, wallabies, possums, bandicoots, sea eagles, parrots, lyrebirds and wombats.

The area is home to more than 200,000 residents, including four large Aboriginal nations: Gundungurra, Ngunnawal, Ngarigo and Yuin. The population is expected to keep growing, with the fastest-growing age group being aged 65 and over. Affordable housing, wide-open spaces, plenty to do and see, arts and cultural events, and a rich history are what attract people to become residents of the area.

Where you'll be working - Queanbeyan

Queanbeyan is located on the Queanbeyan River 289 km south-west of Sydney via Hume and Federal Highways. It is 15 km south-east of Canberra.

Queanbeyan is a city which seems to have a split personality. It is located on the Queanbeyan River less than 15 km from Canberra and consequently it has the identity of a commuter belt town for the Australian capital while also being a service centre for the surrounding agricultural and pastoral industries. Located at an elevation of 576 metres on the highest edge of the Monaro Plains it can be bitterly cold in winter and hot and dry in summer. The area is known for its sheep, cattle, wool, nurseries, honey, wine, hay and barley. It likes to think of itself as a city with a country atmosphere and certainly, when compared to nearby Canberra, it has a languid rural feeling with just the right level of city amenities.

The Queanbeyan hospital has 18 funded inpatient beds, currently services a population of approximately 68,000 residents, and has approximately 27,000 ED presentations per year. Population expansion of the Queanbeyan area is expected to drive increased demand for Emergency Department services including presentation numbers and acuity.

Queanbeyan is a level 3 hospital close to Canberra that is bypassed for STEMI, stroke, and significant trauma. Approximately 20% of ED presentations are children. The Canberra Hospital is our nearest tertiary referral centre, and we have developed good relationship with the Canberra Hospital ED and subspeciality units.

The ED culture is a supportive collegiate environment with excellent collaboration between medical, nursing, allied health, support staff, inpatient teams, and the hospital executive. Patients consistently rate the care provided by the ED as very good. Medical staffing in the ED is senior led and includes staff specialists, and rural generalists, CMOs and the nursing pool is stable with highly qualified nurses. Shortly we will be increasing the nursing workforce such that there is one nurse to 3 patients. Work is underway to expand the workforce to include Junior Medical Officers for 2027. There is an expectation the accreditation with ACEM for training will occur in the future in partnership with other hospitals in Southern LHD

We are specifically looking for people with an interest in education, training and accreditation at FACEM level and at all levels excellent communication and negotiation skills, a passion for delivering high quality care to our community and desire to contribute to a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Queanbeyan hospital including the ED has an excellent culture, there is very good relationship between medical imaging, maternity, anaesthetics, the inpatient wards, and executive. You will never have issues getting a patient admitted due to inpatient team hesitation, other teams are more than willing to assist as needed.

All Clinical shifts are 8 hours. This reduces fatigue and burnout. For staff specialists an 1FTE position would have 25% clinical support time. Clinical support time portfolios include accreditation and training, clinical governance, junior doctor education, supervision and support, mentoring coordination.

What you'll be doing

The role of a Consultant in Emergency Medicine is to lead high quality, specialised and safe clinical care to patients in the Emergency Department within the hospital setting. The Consultant also leads training to and supervision of clinicians in the multidisciplinary setting to achieve quality education outcomes and safe clinical practice.
