The Royal Hospital for Women is a multi-faceted tertiary referral and teaching hospital, internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading centres for the care of mothers, babies, and women with benign gynaecological and gynae-oncology conditions. The Physiotherapy team supports women, men, and gender-diverse individuals with conditions related to cancer treatment, pregnancy, menopause, and lymphoedema. They work with patients to assess needs, set personalised goals, and provide tailored treatments and exercise programs. From the first appointment, they listen to patients’ concerns and develop a plan to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life, both now and in the long term.


The Role

This position has operational accountability for the physiotherapy service within the Royal Hospital for Women and reports operationally to the Director of Nursing and Midwifery and has professional accountability to the Physiotherapy Discipline Advisor.

The Physiotherapy Head of Department will provide operational direction, lead, guide and manage the physiotherapy service across the Royal Hospital for Women and facilitate the implementation of high levels of clinical expertise in order to provide high quality care to patients/clients and their carers consistent with NSW Ministry of Health (MoH) and South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) policies, procedures and standards. The position contributes directly to the development of policy, with consideration of the strategic context.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and current registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning.
  2. Extensive clinical and leadership experience as a practicing physiotherapist within the area of Women’s Health.
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide high-level leadership and strategic management of staff, resources, and services to meet current and future clinical service requirements within the contemporary landscape of Women’s Health, with a strong focus on building team capability and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature.
  5. Demonstrated ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and demonstrated application of evidence-based practice within the physiotherapy discipline.
  6. Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels.
  7. Current drivers’ licence (or a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position).
