Are you an experienced and motivated nursing professional with a passion for patient coordination and system-wide healthcare delivery? Join the Patient Flow Unit as a Nurse Manager Grade 1, where you will play a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and timely patient transfers across the district.


About the Role

The Patient Flow Unit is a district-wide service within the Hunter New England Virtual Health Centre, operating 24/7 to coordinate patient movement across public health facilities.

As the Patient Flow Manager, you will act as a central point of contact, overseeing and facilitating inter-hospital transfers for Priority Category 2–5 patients. You will ensure timely communication, clinical coordination, and efficient use of resources to support optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate safe and efficient inter-hospital transfers across the district
  • Facilitate medical handover and ensure adherence to agreed transfer timeframes
  • Lead bed allocation processes and stakeholder communication
  • Provide clinical advice to support safe patient transfers
  • Monitor and manage district-wide patient flow and transport logistics
  • Identify, escalate, and assist in resolving access and capacity issues
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary stakeholders across all facilities
  • Maintain accurate, real-time documentation of referrals, escalations, and outcomes

About You

You are a highly organised and adaptable nurse leader who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. You bring excellent communication skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands while maintaining a high standard of clinical oversight.

Essential Criteria

  • Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and high-volume workflows
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to work a rotating 7-day shift roster


Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualifications in clinical leadership, management, or a related field (or willingness to undertake)
  • Experience in patient flow coordination, bed management, or clinical operations
