An exciting opportunity exists to join the SSEH Orthoptic leadership team as the Acting Orthoptic Deputy Department Head for 16 hours per week for 12 months (commencing September 2025).
Together with the Orthoptic Department Head, you will have the opportunity to lead a team of highly skilled orthoptists, providing world-class care to outpatients, inpatients and patients attending Emergency, and further develop your leadership skills in a supportive environment.
Where you'll be working
You will be based at the Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital on Macquarie Street, Sydney.
As part of the SSEH Orthoptic Department, you will be working with a team that strives for excellence in patient care, with a culture that focuses on the importance of the experience of patients and staff to deliver truly person-centered care, and improve health outcomes.

The role
In this role, you will be working closely with and supported by the Orthoptic Department Head to provide a high-level guidance, leadership, and management of the SSEH Orthoptic Department to ensure Orthoptic services are delivered within agreed timeframes and meet quality and safety standards.
Together with the Department Head, you will be managing daily operations including roster and leave management, recruitment, and providing clinical leadership for our collaborative care clinics in partnership Ophthalmology specialty units caring for patients with strabismus, paediatrics and patients with chronic stable eye disease.
In a high support, high challenge environment, you will be supported to grow and develop during your time in the role, working with a strengths-based approach to develop your skills and capabilities in leadership and management.

Selection Criteria
Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and registration with The Australian Orthoptic Board and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning
Extensive clinical and leadership experience as a practising Orthoptist.
Ability to provide high level of guidance, leadership and management of resources and services.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature.
Demonstrated ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and demonstrated application of evidence-based practice within Orthoptics.
Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels
