Be part of a first-of-its-kind opportunity to reshape rural and regional mental health care.

We're excited to offer a unique, newly funded Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Transitional Nurse Practitioner (TNP) position based at James Fletcher Hospital, where you'll play a pivotal role in strengthening access to mental health care across the New England and Northwest regions of NSW.

This is not a teaching or research-heavy role—this is hands-on, high-impact clinical work. You’ll be a key player in improving how individuals in rural and regional communities access timely, appropriate, and integrated mental health assessments—particularly those presenting to Emergency Departments.

Why This Role Is Different

  • Brand New Role: The first NP role of its kind within our Mental Health Intake Services.
  • Clinical Focus: Deliver autonomous, advanced practice mental health care with real impact.
  • Collaborative Autonomy: While most work is individualised, you'll partner with ED teams, psychiatry, and the multidisciplinary intake network.
  • Scope to Shape: Help define, refine, and evolve the NP model—backed by strong nursing and psychiatry leadership.
  • Virtual Reach: Extend care via face-to-face or virtual means to meet rural communities where they are.

About the Role
You’ll be:

  • Providing evidence-based, advanced mental health care to consumers across intake and emergency settings.
  • Leading mental health clinical interventions, assessments, and care planning with a high degree of independence.
  • Collaborating closely with ED staff, psychiatrists, GPs, and community providers to deliver seamless, person-centred care.
  • Mentored by a clinical lead psychiatrist and supported by a strong local nursing and leadership structure.
  • Helping shape the future scope of the Nurse Practitioner function across the service.
  • Whether you’re already endorsed as an NP or currently completing your Master's toward endorsement (TNP), we want to hear from you.

What You'll Need

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.

Either:

  • Nurse Practitioner endorsement, or
  • Currently undertaking a Master's of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership, diagnostic and prescribing skills, and a commitment to equity and excellence in care delivery.

Location & Impact

  • Based in Newcastle at James Fletcher Hospital.
  • Integral to HNELHD Mental Health Intake Services, with a special focus on supporting care delivery in rural communities.
  • Helping close the mental health care gap for the New England and Northwest.

Your First 6 Months

  • Integrate into a highly skilled and supportive team.
  • Develop a deep understanding of virtual intake processes.
  • Help co-design and pilot new models of care aligned with regional needs.
  • Start making a tangible difference in consumer experience and outcomes.
