🧠 About the Role

As a Clinical Psychologist within the Nexus multidisciplinary team, you will bring specialist psychological expertise to the assessment, formulation and treatment of young people experiencing acute and complex mental health concerns. Working within a specialised inpatient setting, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to care that is trauma-informed, recovery-focused and responsive to the individual needs of each young person.

The Clinical Psychologist role offers variety across individual therapeutic work, psychological assessment and formulation, multidisciplinary care planning, family and carer engagement, and the development and facilitation of therapeutic group programs.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

🧠 Provide evidence-based psychological assessment, formulation and therapeutic intervention for young people admitted to Nexus.
🤝 Partner with young people, families and carers to establish individualised treatment and recovery goals.
💡 Bring specialist psychological expertise to multidisciplinary assessment, clinical review, care planning and treatment decisions.
🌱 Develop and facilitate individual and group-based therapeutic interventions suited to the acute inpatient environment.
🤍 Work collaboratively with nursing, medical and allied health colleagues to deliver coordinated, trauma-informed and person-centred care.
✨ Contribute to the continued development of the Nexus model of care and a therapeutic environment that supports recovery and wellbeing.
📚 Support continuous improvement, reflective practice and the application of contemporary, evidence-based psychological practice.

🌿 Where You’ll Be Supported

You’ll join an experienced and supportive multidisciplinary team, working closely with nursing, medical and allied health colleagues across Nexus. The role offers valuable exposure to a broad range of mental health presentations and complex clinical needs, creating opportunities to further develop specialist skills in adolescent mental health, psychological formulation and therapeutic intervention within an inpatient setting.

From the outset, you’ll be supported through comprehensive orientation to the unit and its model of care, alongside collaborative multidisciplinary practice, relevant education and professional development opportunities.

There will also be opportunities to build professional connections with Clinical Psychologists across CAMHS and adolescent inpatient services throughout NSW, supporting ongoing professional growth, collaboration and the sharing of contemporary clinical practice.

The Clinical Psychologist will have the opportunity to work with professional autonomy within their scope of practice, while contributing their expertise as an integral member of an experienced and collaborative multidisciplinary team.

🧠 Where You’ll Be Working

Nexus is a specialised 12-bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit located within the John Hunter Hospital campus in Newcastle, providing a safe and supportive environment for young people experiencing acute and complex mental health concerns. The service delivers specialist assessment, treatment and care for young people who require inpatient support when community-based care is not currently appropriate.

Working alongside a skilled multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing, allied health and specialist clinicians, you’ll contribute to care that is collaborative, trauma-informed and recovery-focused. The team values the unique contribution of each discipline, working closely with young people, their families and carers to support meaningful therapeutic outcomes.

This permanent full-time Clinical Psychologist opportunity offers the chance to become part of a specialised adolescent inpatient service, contributing your expertise to the development and delivery of psychological interventions and innovative therapeutic programs within Nexus.

Essential Requirements:

• Current registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
• Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full time duration or recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.

Experience working with children and adolescents and/or within a mental health setting will be highly valued. Support will be provided to build knowledge and skills specific to the adolescent inpatient environment, making this an opportunity to further develop your clinical practice within a specialised CAMHS setting.
