This is a unique opportunity to join the Intensive Care Service at John Hunter Hospital, the major tertiary referral centre for the Hunter, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW regions, caring for some of the most complex and critically ill patients in Australia.
 

As we prepare to open our new Acute Services Building in November 2026, including a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, there has never been a more exciting time to join our team. This major expansion will enhance critical care capacity, support innovation in patient care, and create new opportunities for clinical leadership, research and education.
 

Recognised by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), this Transitional Year Fellowship is designed for intensivists seeking to consolidate advanced intensive care practice whilst developing expertise in a specialised portfolio area.

At John Hunter Hospital, you'll work within a high-performing multidisciplinary ICU that delivers tertiary and quaternary level care across:
• Major trauma
• Neurosurgery and neurocritical care
• Stroke and vascular services
• Cardiothoracic surgery
• Complex abdominal surgery
• Transplantation medicine
• ECMO services
• Retrieval and critical care transport through the Hunter Retrieval Service

This fellowship provides exposure to a breadth of case complexity rarely available elsewhere, whilst supporting your transition into independent specialist practice.


Fellowship Opportunities
Alongside advanced clinical practice, Fellows are encouraged to pursue dedicated portfolio interests including:
• Research and clinical trials
• Medical education and simulation
• Echocardiography
• ECMO
• Quality improvement and patient safety
• Service development and innovation
 

You will be supported by experienced Intensive Care specialists committed to developing future leaders in critical care medicine.
 

What You'll Do
• Deliver high-quality, evidence-based intensive care to critically ill patients.
• Participate in specialist ICU and on-call rosters.
• Contribute to research, education, quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
• Supervise and mentor junior medical staff and multidisciplinary learners.
• Collaborate with retrieval, specialty and referring teams across the region.
• Develop advanced leadership, teaching and scholarly skills in preparation for future consultant practice.
 

Position Details
• Full-time (40 hours per week)
• Part-time arrangements considered for suitable applicants
• Commencing in January 2027 fixed term for 12 months
• Based at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle NSW
 

Essential Requirements
• Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM)
• Current registration or eligibility for registration with AHPRA
 

Eligibility: Applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen with a current passport, or hold an appropriate visa allowing you to live and work in Australia. Unfortunately, we cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.
