About the Service
The Infection Prevention Service is a district-wide service that supports health managers and clinical staff in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections across all clinical environments.
Our service provides expert guidance and standardised infection prevention and control practices aligned with state and national safety requirements to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care for patients, staff, and visitors. The Executive team is based at the John Hunter Hospital Innovation Precinct, with Infection Prevention Practitioners supporting Rural and Regional Health Services, Acute Hospitals, Integrated Care Networks, and Community Health Services across the district.
An exciting opportunity exists for experienced and motivated Clinical Nurse Consultants to join the Infection Prevention Service. There are two position available, One at John Hunter Hospital and One at Maitland Hospital.
The Role:
As a Clinical Nurse Consultant within the Infection Prevention Service, you will provide expert clinical consultancy and leadership across Hunter New England Local Health District, supporting best practice infection prevention and control initiatives in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external agencies.
You will contribute to excellence in patient, staff, and visitor care through education, surveillance, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
- Provide expert infection prevention and control advice across a variety of healthcare settings
- Support healthcare teams in managing and preventing healthcare-associated infections
- Participate in surveillance, auditing, and quality improvement activities
- Deliver education and training to clinical and non-clinical staff
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to support safe clinical practice
- Contribute to policy development and implementation of infection prevention strategies
- Promote compliance with state and national infection prevention standards
About You
The successful candidate will demonstrate:

- Leadership qualities and the ability to work independently
- Strong initiative and problem-solving capability
- Commitment to patient safety and continuous improvement
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships across multidisciplinary teams
Essential Criteria:
- Registered Nurse with current authority to practice with APRHA, with at least five years post graduate nursing experience
- Post graduate qualification related to Infection Prevention or evidence of working towards the same.
