About the Opportunity
The Clinical Nurse Consultant (Grade 2) – Specialist Dementia Care – Mental Health plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of care for individuals experiencing Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) within the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD). This advanced practice nurse provides expert clinical leadership, mentoring, and education to staff across the Specialist Dementia Care Unit (SDCU) and Older People’s Mental Health (OPMH) services. Through evidence-based consultation and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including psychiatrists, service managers, and family stakeholders—the CNC ensures person-centred, trauma-informed care that supports both residents and their transitions into and out of the SDCU. The role also contributes to continuous service improvement, policy development, and the integration of research into practice, aligning with local and state-wide strategic health priorities.

 

What You'll be Doing
Provide expert clinical consultancy that supports the delivery of patient care within a sector/hospital or sizeable mixed clinical environment, with potential district-wide application. As a lead clinician, provide an expert clinical consultancy in a clinical services team supporting the delivery of excellent patient/client care within an area of specialty. Where You'll Be Working
SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services provide comprehensive, community-based mental health care across South Western Sydney.

These services cater to different age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and older persons, ensuring specialised care throughout various life stages. The multidisciplinary teams offer a range of supports, including mental health assessments, crisis intervention, care coordination, and therapy. They work closely with inpatient services, GPs, and other community organisations to provide holistic care.

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience. Approved post graduate nursing qualifications in a field relevant to the specialty field or such other qualifications or experience relevant to older persons mental health and/or specialist dementia care.
  2. Can you describe a time when you provided expert consultation for a patient with complex Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD)? How did you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement an effective care plan?
  3. What strategies have you used to mentor and educate staff in dementia care settings, particularly around behaviour support? How do you ensure that evidence-based practices are consistently applied across services like the SDCU and OPMH?
  4. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
