Use your connection to culture and community to lead change in population health and improve outcomes for Aboriginal people. As a Population Health Trainee, you’ll help improve health outcomes for whole community including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderand culturally and linguistically diverse communities, while completing a fully funded Master of Public Health. Over a three-year, full-time traineeship, you’ll be employed as a Health Manager (Level 1) and gain practical experience across teams such as BreastScreen,Health Promotion, Research & Epidemiology and the Public Health Unit. Your connection to community and understanding of the factors that shape Aboriginal health will guide your work as you support programs that make a real difference. You’ll have generous studyleave, support from Ministry of Health trainee networks, and ongoing cultural guidance from our Aboriginal Health Unit.  
 

SWSLHD operates its services across the traditional lands of the Dharawal, Darug and Gundungurra peoples, in strong partnership with local Aboriginal communities to deliver better, culturally responsive health care, led by our Aboriginal Health services.We are a district that is committed to supporting you grow and develop your skills. You will be provided with cultural supervision, participate in cultural strengths mapping and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce.  
  

Are You the Right Fit? 

  • This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position.
  • You must have a health-related undergraduate degree or ability to meet the admission requirements for the postgraduate degree of Master of Public Health (MPH) at a university in Australia.

 

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Rotating through population-health teams and contributing to programs that support Aboriginal health
  • Using your cultural knowledge to strengthen communityfocused health initiatives
  • Building skills in screening, health promotion, research, public health and community engagement 
  • Completing your Master of Public Health with workplace support and dedicated study time
  • Connecting with trainees across NSW through Ministry of Health events and training

Selection Criteria 
To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below. 
 

1. In this role being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement. Tell us about your mob and connection to culture?  
2. Have you successfully completed a recognised health-related undergraduate degree, and are you able to meet the admission requirements for a Master of Public Health (MPH) program at an Australian university? Please provide the name of the university and details of your undergraduate qualification.  
3. Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities, including demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health.  
4. Experience working in a multidisciplinary team and in partnership with community organisations, nongovernment, and government agencies.
