About the role
As a Wardsperson at Glen Innes District Hospital, you will work under clinical direction to assist healthcare staff in providing safe, high-quality care to patients while ensuring the hospital environment remains clean, safe, and efficient. This role supports patient flow across the facility through tasks such as patient transfers, assisting with mobility and personal care needs, and transporting items throughout the hospital. You will also undertake important cleaning duties, including terminal cleaning and infection control procedures, to maintain high standards of hygiene and safety. Working closely with the clinical team, you will contribute to the smooth day-to-day functioning of the health service while ensuring patients are supported with dignity, respect, and empathy.
Where you’ll be working
You will be based at Glen Innes District Hospital, a valued rural healthcare facility serving the Glen Innes community and surrounding region. You will be part of a small, collaborative team where staff work closely together to support patients and each other. Daily huddles, open communication, and supportive leadership from the Manager and Facility Manager help create a positive team environment where staff feel valued and supported in their roles.

Your ability to stay organised, use initiative, and work calmly under pressure helps ensure patient flow and essential services continue to run smoothly.
Key Accountabilities
- Assist with lifting and moving patients and supporting personal care and hygiene needs to ensure quality patient care.
- Perform cleaning duties in accordance with commercial cleaning practices and infection control policies, including terminal cleans and linen removal.
- Maintain cleaning equipment and ward stores, including checking and replacing oxygen cylinders.
- Undertake portering duties including transferring patients, collecting pharmacy items, and transporting waste.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to WHS and chemical handling guidelines.
- Assist with maintaining patient flow and supporting clinical teams to deliver effective care.
- Assist with the transfer of deceased patients to the mortuary and support staff during viewings where required.
- Ensure theatre areas are cleaned efficiently and prioritise tasks using initiative.
- Complete all required cleaning and compliance documentation.
- Act in accordance with NSW Health Code of Conduct, the HNE Health Values Charter, and demonstrate culturally respectful behaviours.
