We are seeking committed, motivated General Practitioners to join the Maitland Hospital Emergency Department as Visiting Medical Officers in General Practice, a unique long-term employment opportunity designed to foster career progression within an Emergency Department.

This role supports development into a highly valued senior member of the ED team, with structured educational and procedural expectations tailored to your experience. Each GP VMO will have access to an Associateship-accredited supervisor, protected non-clinical time for professional development, and opportunities to build leadership capacity within the department.
 

As part of the Senior Medical Team, you’ll take on key roles in clinical governance, education, operations, logistics or research. Your commitment to departmental meetings, clinical practice development, and policy shaping is vital to the ongoing excellence of Maitland ED.
 

The Position Offers:
- non-clinical time for CPD and departmental duties
- Participation in a 24/7 rotating roster (10-hour shifts), with increasing responsibility, including in-charge night shifts when assessed as capable
 

About Maitland ED:
- Urban district ED seeing approximately 150 patients per day — one third paediatrics
- 20–22% admission rate across a range of specialties
- Referral hub for eight rural GP-run hospitals within the Local Health District

Essential Criteria:

  • A primary medical degree registered with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Fellowship of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP)
  • Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in General Practice.
  • Completion of or currently undertaking an Emergency Life Support Course and skills, experience and interest in Emergency Medicine. 
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and electronic record-keeping skills
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Commitment to public health values, resource stewardship, and broader service contribution
