Canterbury Hospital is seeking an Unaccredited Trainee in Cardiology to join our medical team for the 2027 clinical year. This opportunity will support training doctors to meet the needs of the Canterbury patient population whilst developing expertise in a complex clinical environment.

Canterbury hospital is a 215-bed metropolitan acute general hospital in the Sydney Local Health District providing services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. The facility is also undergoing a $350M redevelopment for expansion of acute clinical services planned in 2027. The Canterbury area is home to a culturally and linguistically diverse community catering to patients with complex health problems and limited access to health care. Canterbury Hospital therefore offers a unique opportunity for doctors in training to develop hands-on clinical experience whilst learning in a supervised environment.
What you'll be doing
The Unaccredited Trainee in Cardiology will provide effective clinical management of inpatients and outpatients of Canterbury Hospital, working under the supervision of consultant cardiologists to ensure quality health care for the local community, while developing expertise in Cardiology in a complex clinical environment.
The trainee will assist to manage common acute and chronic cardiac issues such as NSTEACS, acute arrhythmias and heart failure. The trainee will also contribute to performing, interpreting and reporting non-invasive cardiac investigations such as transthoracic echocardiography, stress echocardiography (and stress ECGs) and Holter monitoring. The trainee will play a key role in the Heart Failure Clinic. They will be involved in the assessment and ongoing management of a diverse range of heart failure patients, including those with newly diagnosed cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and cardiac amyloidosis. There will be opportunity to contribute to clinical research projects through the rotation, along with opportunities for exposure to cardiac genetic testing, cardiac MRI interpretation, and the management of complex cardiomyopathies under supervision.
The role includes patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures, maintaining adequate medical records, organising and interpreting appropriate investigations. They will work under the supervision of Cardiologists and will be expected to have advanced communication skills, including escalating matters of concern in a timely manner, according to the clinical urgency.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completion of at least four postgraduate years and demonstrated experience in Cardiology and/or General Medicine. Completion of Basic Physician Training written and clinical examinations would be viewed favourably.
- Demonstrated commitment to a career in Cardiology/General Medicine including education, excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement, research and teaching with a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills and judgment and expertise.
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work roles with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team - diligence, punctuality, organisation, record keeping, time management, problem solving skills, teamwork.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and non-medical colleagues.
